Understanding Student Mental health

Wednesday, February 05, 2014, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Student Life Staff are often the first contact for students experiencing psychological difficulties.    These difficulties may include: difficulty adjusting to the demands of the first year of university, experiencing increased distress related to academic stressors, the first onset of a psychiatric condition, or pre-existing psychological difficulties that interfere with functioning in an academic setting.

This session will provide participants with a brief introduction to common mental health difficulties on campus, how to manage one’s discomfort/distress when interacting with students in distress, practical strategies for how to be supportive while maintaining appropriate boundaries, and when and how to refer a student for services, including an introduction to the comprehensive array of campus and community resources that can help students with mental health concerns.
